Healthcare in China: Frequently Asked Questions
Planning medical care in China? Find practical answers before you book, pay, or travel.
China offers several routes to medical care, including public hospitals, international medical departments and private hospitals. For international patients, the main challenge is often understanding which route is accessible, what documents are needed, how to budget and what a hospital has actually confirmed.
This guide covers administrative access and planning. Requirements vary by hospital, department, patient and treatment. MedRoute helps organize information and coordinate hospital inquiries; licensed healthcare professionals make medical decisions.
Choosing a Hospital in China
Can foreigners visit public hospitals in China?
Foreign patients may contact public hospitals, but registration and service requirements vary. A general National Health Commission guide describes passport use during hospital registration and common outpatient steps; it does not establish that every hospital or department accepts every document or request. Confirm the requirements with the hospital before visiting.
Evidence and scope. General government hospital-access guidance. National Health Commission — Common procedures of seeing the doctor at Chinese hospitals (checked October 16, 2026) The cited guide was published in 2019. Confirm current identity-document and registration rules with the specific hospital. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
Should I choose a public hospital or an international medical department?
Consider the clinical service you need, language support, insurance arrangements and budget. Standard public outpatient services may have different charges and navigation requirements from an international medical department. An international department does not guarantee a particular doctor, English-language care or insurance coverage.
Evidence and scope. General planning guidance; no single route applies to every patient. Ask the hospital about the specific department, clinician, language and payment arrangements. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
How do I know which hospital department to contact?
Start with the reason for your inquiry and the medical records you already have. Ask the hospital which department handles that service and whether an initial general outpatient assessment or pre-appointment review is available. MedRoute can help organize an administrative inquiry, but it does not diagnose or determine a clinical pathway.
Evidence and scope. Practical coordination guidance. The hospital decides which department is appropriate and whether it can accept the request. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
Hospital Appointments & Registration
Can I book a hospital appointment in China using a foreign passport?
Some hospitals accept passport holders through their official booking channels or registration counters, but requirements differ. Ask whether your passport can be used online, whether you need to create a hospital patient record, and which details are required. An appointment inquiry is not a confirmed appointment.
Evidence and scope. General hospital registration guidance describes passport use; requirements remain institution-specific. National Health Commission — Common procedures of seeing the doctor at Chinese hospitals (checked October 16, 2026) The NHC guide is general and dates from 2019. Confirm the current process with the hospital you plan to visit. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
What if I cannot use WeChat or do not have a Chinese phone number?
Ask the hospital whether it offers a telephone appointment, official website booking or an in-person registration counter. Digital verification requirements vary by hospital. Use contact information published by the hospital and do not send passport details or medical records to an unverified booking agent.
Evidence and scope. The HKU-SZH booking guide publishes phone, web, WeChat and on-site channels as one hospital-specific example. HKU-SZH — Official English booking guidelines (checked October 16, 2026) HKU-SZH's channels do not establish the booking options available at other hospitals. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
Can I visit a Chinese hospital without an appointment?
Some hospitals offer on-site registration, but a same-day specialist appointment is not guaranteed. Confirm the route and availability before making non-refundable travel arrangements. Treat a submitted request or informal message as unconfirmed until the hospital provides confirmation.
Evidence and scope. General access guidance and HKU-SZH's on-site appointment notice. National Health Commission — Common procedures of seeing the doctor at Chinese hospitals (checked October 16, 2026); HKU-SZH — Official English booking guidelines (checked October 16, 2026) Availability and same-day access depend on the hospital, department and date. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
What happens during a typical outpatient visit?
A visit may include registration, check-in, consultation, payment, tests, review of results and medication collection if prescribed. A further test or follow-up visit may be needed. Ask how results are delivered and whether another consultation is required before you leave.
Evidence and scope. The NHC guide describes a general outpatient sequence, including registration, consultation, tests and payment. National Health Commission — Common procedures of seeing the doctor at Chinese hospitals (checked October 16, 2026) The sequence and timing vary by hospital and clinical instructions; the source guide was published in 2019. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
Language & Medical Records
Can I receive medical care in English in China?
English-language support is not the same at every hospital, department or appointment. Confirm the language available for the consultation, registration, consent documents and medical reports. If needed for treatment discussions or informed consent, ask whether a qualified medical interpreter can be arranged.
Evidence and scope. MedRoute's direct inquiry confirmed English-language dental consultations at HKU-SZH only. MedRoute operations record — HKU-SZH customer-service inquiry, October 14, 2026 (checked October 16, 2026) That operational confirmation was dated October 14, 2026 and applies to the dental service discussed; it is not a general guarantee for China or for every HKU-SZH department. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
What medical records should I prepare?
Prepare a concise medical summary and relevant previous reports, imaging, medication and allergy information, and treatment history. Some hospitals may request original imaging files such as DICOM studies. Ask the receiving institution which records and translations it needs and how to transfer them securely.
Evidence and scope. General preparation guidance. The receiving hospital determines which documents and file formats are required. Do not send records through an unapproved channel. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
Medical Costs, Payment & Insurance
How much does it cost to see a doctor in China?
There is no single consultation price for all hospitals. Charges differ by institution, department and service. Separate consultation or registration charges from tests, imaging, procedures, medication, hospitalization and follow-up. Treat a general range as a planning reference unless the hospital confirms the charge that applies to your visit.
Evidence and scope. No nationwide price is asserted here. Request current, itemized information from the hospital; a treatment estimate may change after clinical assessment. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
Can I use international health insurance in a Chinese hospital?
Possibly. Coverage and direct billing depend on your policy, the hospital, department, service and any pre-authorization. Some institutions offer direct billing with participating insurers; other visits require payment first and a later claim. Ask both the insurer and hospital about your exact service before treatment.
Evidence and scope. HKU-SZH publishes selected IMC direct-billing arrangements and asks patients to confirm with their insurer. HKU-SZH — International Medical Center insurance services (checked October 16, 2026) The HKU-SZH information is specific to its IMC and listed arrangements. A participating-provider listing does not confirm an individual claim. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
Can I use Visa, Mastercard, Alipay or WeChat Pay at a hospital?
Accepted methods vary by hospital, counter and transaction. Shanghai government guidance describes international bank-card and mobile-payment options in Shanghai, subject to the payment network and provider rules. That guidance does not confirm acceptance at a particular hospital. Ask the hospital about card logos, limits and deposits before your visit.
Evidence and scope. Shanghai government payment guidance, plus a MedRoute Visa acceptance inquiry specific to HKU-SZH. Shanghai Government — Payment methods for foreigners (checked October 16, 2026); MedRoute operations record — HKU-SZH customer-service inquiry, October 14, 2026 (checked October 16, 2026) The government guidance applies to Shanghai. The HKU-SZH Visa confirmation was made October 14, 2026 and should be reconfirmed for the relevant department and transaction; Mastercard acceptance at HKU-SZH has not been verified by MedRoute. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
What documents should I request for an insurance claim?
Ask your insurer what it requires before your appointment. Depending on the policy and service, documents may include an official receipt or invoice, itemized charges, a medical report, test results or a discharge summary. Confirm whether the hospital can provide the required language, format or certification. Payment does not guarantee reimbursement.
Evidence and scope. General claim-preparation guidance; HKU-SZH publishes direct-billing information but does not determine a patient's reimbursement claim. HKU-SZH — International Medical Center insurance services (checked October 16, 2026) The insurer decides claim requirements and reimbursement eligibility for the individual policy. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.

Can international patients make appointments at HKU-SZH?
HKU-SZH publishes an English general outpatient booking hotline at +86 755 8691 3366 and an International Medical Center booking hotline at +86 755 8691 3388. Its guide lists online and on-site routes, but notes that not every department offers online booking. MedRoute's October 13, 2026 inquiry confirmed that foreign passport holders could request appointments; the hospital still determines registration requirements, department access and availability.
Evidence and scope. Official hospital booking guide and a separate MedRoute customer-service inquiry. HKU-SZH — Official English booking guidelines (checked October 16, 2026); MedRoute operations record — HKU-SZH customer-service inquiry, October 13, 2026 (checked October 16, 2026) The phone numbers and channels are published by HKU-SZH. Passport-request information is an operational inquiry, not a booking or guarantee; reconfirm current details with the hospital. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
Does HKU-SZH provide insurance direct billing?
The hospital's International Medical Center publishes direct-billing arrangements with participating insurers and service administrators. Coverage depends on the individual policy, service and any required authorization. MedRoute was told on October 13, 2026 that routine commercial direct billing was generally unavailable for the dental service discussed. Confirm your own eligibility with both the hospital and insurer.
Evidence and scope. Official IMC insurance information and a service-specific MedRoute inquiry about dental direct billing. HKU-SZH — International Medical Center insurance services (checked October 16, 2026); MedRoute operations record — HKU-SZH IMC dental insurance inquiry, October 13, 2026 (checked October 16, 2026) The dental inquiry is limited to the service discussed and does not override the hospital's general published IMC arrangements. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
Travel Preparation & Emergencies
Do I need a visa to travel to China for medical care?
Entry requirements depend on your nationality, passport, travel purpose, destination, route and length of stay. Some visa-free policies are limited to particular regions or travelers and have specific conditions. Check the current rules with China's National Immigration Administration or the relevant embassy or consulate. A hospital appointment does not guarantee entry permission.
Evidence and scope. The National Immigration Administration's current regional-policy page lists limited, conditional visa-free routes, including some that cover medical treatment. National Immigration Administration — Regional visa-free entry policies (checked October 16, 2026) Eligibility is traveler- and itinerary-specific. The cited page was updated August 20, 2026; confirm the latest rules before travel. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
What should I do if I need emergency medical care in China?
For a medical emergency in mainland China, call 120 or seek immediate emergency assistance. Give responders your location and relevant information. Do not delay urgent care to arrange a routine appointment or wait for an international patient coordinator. MedRoute Global is not an emergency response service.
Evidence and scope. The National Health Commission's general hospital guide identifies 120 for medical emergencies. National Health Commission — Common procedures of seeing the doctor at Chinese hospitals (checked October 16, 2026) This number is for mainland China. The source page was published in 2019; use local emergency services where you are. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
What happens if I need follow-up care after returning home?
Before departure, ask the treating team for the records, instructions, prescriptions and follow-up arrangements relevant to your case. You may need to coordinate between the hospital in China and your healthcare provider at home. Where agreed, MedRoute can assist with administrative follow-up; clinical monitoring and medical advice remain with your treating professionals.
Evidence and scope. General care-coordination planning guidance. Follow-up instructions and clinical responsibility are determined by the patient's treating professionals. Editorial review: October 16, 2026.
